Peter A. Baynes, Executive Director of the New York State Conference of Mayors,

today congratulated the Village of Dansville for joining the New York Municipal Insurance

Reciprocal (NYMIR). Baynes stated, "The Village of Dansville has shown great foresight

in taking control of its liability insurance costs. Mayor Vogt and the Board of Trustees are

to be commended for joining with local governments throughout New York State in owning

and managing their own insurance company."

Faced with limited revenues and ever increasing expenses, municipal officials have

come together as an insurance reciprocal to cut costs. By working with some of the best

insurance experts in the private sector and the NYS Insurance Department, NYMIR was

licensed on September 1, 1993 and now boasts more than 600 member municipalities.

The reciprocal is fully owned and governed by its member cities, villages, counties and

towns. As a non-profit entity without the need to generate profits for shareholders, NYMIR

is able to operate at reduced costs, thereby saving tax dollars. Like any other insurance

company, the reciprocal is fully regulated by the State Insurance Department.

In conclusion, Baynes stated, "This is a prominent example of local governments

working together to control costs. We are pleased to have the Village of Dansville as a

NYMIR member and we look forward to many years of providing comprehensive insurance

to the Village."
